Happy 205th Birthday To Florence Nightingale

Happy 205th Birthday To Florence Nightingale

We would like to wish a Happy 205th Birthday to Florence Nightingale — the founder of modern nursing! “The Lady with the Lamp” is well remembered for prioritizing sanitation and individual care when treating British soldiers during the Crimean War in 1854. To combat mass infections and low hygiene, Nightingale and her 38 nurses began cleaning every room and stressed handwashing in unsanitary conditions. This helped bring the death rate at her military hospital down from 40 to 2 percent. Always remember to practice both proper sanitation and handwashing! As Nightingale’s efforts showed, it goes a long way to promote…

FireFighters — BestPractices–LearnTheLingo-17

Did you know that firefighters are trained to see an active hazardous materials scene in three separate zones — hot, warm, and cold? A hot zone is where the most danger is. Only those immediately involved in life safety are allowed into this area. Firefighters in the warm zone are stationed immediately outside and directly support personnel in the hot zone. They are fully dressed to enter the hot zone, if needed. The cold zone surrounds both zones and serves as a crowd-control line, a rehabilitation area, and a staging area for media engagement, personnel, and portable equipment. These zones…

Why are firefighters pushing fire trucks into the fire station? The tradition of pushing brand-new fire trucks into a fire station dates back to the 19th century when horses pulled the firefighting apparatus. Horses couldn’t back into the station, so firefighters had to detach the horses from the equipment and push the pump into the bay. Today, we honor the rich history of the fire service industry with push-in ceremonies and take pride in the new investment. We also want to thank the residents of our great county for their approval of the 2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax,…

Water Safety Month In Gwinnett County

Water Safety Month In Gwinnett County

On Tuesday, Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, on behalf of the Board of Commissioners, recognized May as Water Safety Month in Gwinnett County. As the weather warms up and we head to pools, lakes, and splash pads, it’s crucial to stay mindful of water safety. Drowning remains a leading cause of preventable death for children and a significant risk for teens. We’re proud of the hardworking teams at Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, Gwinnett Parks and Recreation, and partners like the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. Their programs and outreach provide residents with the knowledge and skills to stay safe in…

Arson Awareness Week — Safety Tips

It's Arson Awareness Week, and this year’s focus is preventing arson. Arson is a serious crime that endangers lives, property, and entire communities. Let's work together to reduce this risk and keep our neighborhoods safe. Construction sites: Secure perimeters and limit access. Houses of worship: Enhance security and be vigilant. Vacant buildings: Report unsecured structures…
