Christmas Tree & Care — Tips

Did you know one out of 32 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death? If you’re choosing a real tree this year, properly watering your tree can help reduce the risk of a home fire. Here are some tips for selecting the right Christmas tree and giving it proper care to prevent fires:
• Check tree needles: Needles should bend, not break, and be difficult to remove.
• Do a trunk test: A fresh tree’s trunk is sticky. Bouncing the trunk should not dislodge many needles.
• Avoid heat sources: Keep the tree away from fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters, and heat vents.
• Supply water: Regularly check and refill the tree stand with water.
• Limit display time: Avoid early setup and prolonged display (no more than 2 weeks).
