When an emergency vehicle like an ambulance, fire truck, or police vehicle approaches, do you know the safest way to react? Whether you’re on a highway or in traffic, we know scenarios are different. Understanding the basics helps keep our roads safer for everyone, especially as we respond to emergencies.
Tips to follow when an ambulance is on the Road :
- Stay Calm: Don’t panic. Being calm will help you make clear decisions.
- Pull to the Right: If you are on a multi-lane road, move to the right lane and stop. If you are in the left lane, merge into the right lane if it’s safe to do so.
- Stop: Come to a complete stop until the ambulance has passed. Keep your foot on the brake to let the ambulance driver know you’ve stopped.
- Do Not Follow: Do not follow the ambulance or attempt to drive close behind it.
- Be Aware of Other Emergency Vehicles: There may be multiple emergency vehicles, so be attentive and watch for others after the first one passes.
- Do Not Enter Intersections: If you are approaching an intersection, do not enter it if an ambulance is approaching. Stay put and wait for it to pass.
- “Move Over” Law: In many areas, there is a “Move Over” law requiring drivers to move over one lane (if safe) or slow down when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of the road.
- Divided Highways: On divided highways, you do not need to stop if the emergency vehicle is on the other side of the median, according to some online resources.
