Smoking – Fire Hazards – Safety Tips

Every year, home fires caused by smoking materials take lives that could have been saved, often starting when someone falls asleep with a lit cigarette.
Smoking in bed, on the couch, or when drowsy is one of the most common causes of fatal home fires.
Keep your home safe with these simple steps:
  • • Never smoke in bed or while lying down. It’s easy to doze off before the cigarette is out.
  • • Use deep, sturdy ashtrays. Set them on solid surfaces away from bedding or paper.
  • • Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away.
  • • Avoid smoking when you’re tired, drinking, or taking medication that makes you sleepy.
  • • If oxygen is in use — never smoke or allow others to smoke nearby.
It only takes one ember to ignite disaster. Choose safety first.
