Battalion Chief Matt Bowen -GCFES – Retirement
Today, we proudly honor Battalion Chief Matt Bowen as he retires from Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services after an extraordinary career that began on November 2, 1996.

For Chief Bowen, the fire service was more than a career, it was a calling sparked early in life after growing up near a Gwinnett County firefighter. That inspiration grew into nearly three decades of dedicated service to this community.
Throughout his career, Chief Bowen served with professionalism, humility, and commitment in the following roles:

• Firefighter – Stations 21C & 13C
• Driver/Engineer – Stations 3A, 22A, 9A, and Fire Academy Instructor
• Lieutenant – Stations 1C, 17C, 4C & 19C
• Captain – Stations 12C & 5C
• Battalion Chief – Battalion 5C

When reflecting on his career, Chief Bowen often spoke about the people, the teamwork, friendships, and mentorship that shaped his journey. He expressed special gratitude to his first Lieutenant, Ron Buffington, whose guidance and belief left a lasting impact.

As he begins this next chapter, Chief Bowen looks forward to spending more time fishing, camping, and enjoying time with family.

He leaves this message for future firefighters:

“Do your job to the best of your ability. Do what is right, not what is easy. Show up early and ready to work. Train regularly, stay in shape, and take care of your body. This job can kill you; do everything in your power to make sure it doesn’t.”

We extend our sincere gratitude to Battalion Chief Matt Bowen for nearly 30 years of honorable service, leadership, and mentorship. His impact on Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services will continue well beyond his final shift.

Congratulations on your retirement, Chief Bowen, and thank you for your service to Gwinnett County.
