Trave Safety Tips During Storm

What’s the best way to help first responders during a winter storm?
Stay off the roads!

Please stay home if you can. However, if you must travel, remember these tips:

•Keep your gas tank as full as you can. A full tank will also keep the fuel line from freezing.
•Install good winter tires and make sure they have enough tread.
•When driving, increase your following distance from 3 to 4 seconds to 5 to 6 seconds. It takes longer to slow down and stop on icy roads.
•Keep family and emergency phone numbers, including your auto insurance provider and a towing company in your phone. Carry an emergency supply kit and portable phone charger
•Share your route and expected arrival time with someone you trust
• Slow down and leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles
• Avoid sudden braking, quick acceleration, or sharp turns
• Use your headlights so you’re more visible
• Watch for black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas
• Give road crews extra space while they work
• If traffic lights are out, treat the intersection as a four way stop
• Watch for downed power lines and treat them as live

Slow down, increase following distance, and expect the unexpected.
