Gwinnett recently received recognition from the National Association of Counties for 29 outstanding programs and projects. Among these is the Civil War and Reconstruction in Georgia High School Field Study Program, which exemplifies excellence in historic and cultural programming.
Launched in 2024 at the Yellow River Post Office site in Lilburn, this immersive field study brings history to life through featured primary documents and historic structures, enriching students’ education and aligning with curriculum standards. Students can engage with interactive stations covering topics like daily life, economics, and medicine — grounded in the voices of Civil War soldiers, enslaved people, and local communities from the 1860s. By exploring history where it actually happened, this program offers a powerful learning experience, using local resources to foster community connections and share stories.
